Dubstep drum loops can actually be likened to half tempo rock grooves and often resemble the classic death metal STOMP beat. Perhaps that's why dubstep has such a heavy vibe?

Of course dubstep drum grooves are heavily processed, chopped up and mangled which echo the gritty jungle patterns of the 90's.
